Do you come from a farming background or have an interest in agriculture? Over 80% of our business is comprised of agricultural cooperatives and related agricultural entities. We audit clients in 9 Midwest states and California. A number of our clients are among the largest and most progressive in the Midwest.
Are you afraid of heights? Odd question, huh? Part of our audit process is, obviously, to observe inventory. We find ourselves climbing grain bins, measuring piles of dry fertilizer, counting livestock…..you name it. This gives us a chance to get out of the office and be outside, which can be a welcomed break. We take great pride in serving our farming related clients and have been doing so since 1964. In fact, we have client relationships that go back all 45 years! But, there’s much more to us, and our firm, than our love for counting pigs and corn.
On the other end of the spectrum, we also provide audit services to a number of credit unions, primarily in Iowa, and local Iowa governmental entities. Because of our concentrations in these few industries, Gardiner Thomsen, CPAs has established itself as an industry specialist and has been recognized as a leader by clients and others within the various industries we serve.
As you can imagine, our work includes a fair amount of travel. Providing audit services means we are onsite at the client’s business. The typical audit might last one week, allowing you to work with many clients during the year. We generally spend between 30 and 40% of our time traveling, which can vary by office.
The breakdown of our offices is as follows:
Des Moines, Iowa– Serves personal tax clients, agricultural clients and all of our Credit Union clients
Charles City, Iowa– Serves agricultural clients and all of our governmental entity clients
Lincoln, Nebraska and Sioux Falls, South Dakota– Serve only agricultural clients.
We are looking for individuals who are interested in serving as Staff Accountants, and we have several positions available. However, in order to get your foot in the door, you should be a CPA, or at least be a candidate, and you should be seeking a challenging opportunity in public accounting. We see challenge as a chance to improve, and we face challenges every day– whether they come from situations with clients, new auditing standards, new reporting standards or the manner in which we perform our auditing services.
We are also a progressive firm, conducting our audits using “paperless” audit software. So, we need staff members who are great with computers and have a thorough working knowledge of Excel and Word. It would also benefit you to have a positive attitude, friendly and outgoing personality, and the ability to sense humor. We like to have fun while we work and want to make sure you would feel comfortable as a member of our team.
